Pharmacy tech pill counting/script reading help?

awgwhoami asked the question:

Hi, I’m being trained as a pharmacy tech at the moment and I was trying to find different sized pills so i can get faster at counting. I only get about 3-6hours a week for training and there’s no guarantee that i’ll be filling. Anyone know where i can find/order them? Ah, another thing.. Is there a site with handwritten scripts so i can get used to deciphering them(or atleast get a chance to try more often). Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Try counting what’s in your medicine cabinet. Or you can use vitamins, acetaminophen. For smaller tablets use lo dose aspirin. As far as reading Rx’s just go to the prescription file at your work and check to see what you come up with compared to what was dispensed.

Depending on where you work you will begin to see the drugs most often used in your area. You could look online or even have people write things out for you to practice with, but it really won’t help that much. (You will get used to the doctors handwriting and scripts in your area)

As for counting, some places (like Walgreen’s) have automatic counters. If you want to speed yourself up, you can try counting things you already have. (aspirin tablets, tylenol, or things like jelly beans, pennies…)

Most importantly, know that there are several things that appear to look similar in writing, but are very different… You will get used to normal doses too. (so that you will know when something doesn’t look right)

    Congrats and good luck!!
