How does one get trained as an optometry assistant/dispensing?

Jay asked the question:

Been wanting to get into this field for awhile and was also thinking of pharmacy tech as well. Is there any specialized training that you need to be for an optometry assistant/technician or dispensing? I think it’s an OD, or something like that. I’m in Hawaii, and not aware of any curriculum at any college offering this. Can you take a test or be somewhat of an apprentice and be licensed later?

See a career counselor college or high school they can test you for what you are best suited for and also answer that question. Good luck

I have spent the last seven years working in optometry. I have done everything from running a lab (making glasses), retail, dispensing, and managing. You should start out at a company that offers excellent on the job training….Lenscrafters. They are great!! They pay you more and more as you move through the training program (6 mos to a year long) and they have great benefits. If you live in a state that is licensed (check the ABO website) you may have to get licensed eventually but in the beginning you work under someone that is. You can get ABO (american board of opticianry)certified and NCL certified in which you will make more money and have more opportunities in management. The money is ok, same as a pharmacy tech. But with a pharmacy tech placement usually an associate degree is required.
    Good luck
