Pharmacy Tech Question?
Katie D asked the question:
Hi all, I am debating on taking a Pharmacy Tech Class at the local community colleg, the class cost close to $1000 and that does not include the test to get certified. I’m wondering if it is possible to work at a local Pharmacy and recieve on the job training then take the test to get certified?
Also if I do not take the classs but get certified through the store I work at, could I move to another state and work with the same certification?
Is there a demand for Pharmacy Techs?

There will always be a demand for people in Pharmacy. However, many won’t hire you without the certification, it may have something to do with insurance. Check it out…
It all depends upon the state regulations, I have a friend who is the pharmacy tech instructor at our local technical college. He went to school and got his certification; however, I have former students who did not attend school, but who took and passed the certification test who are pharmacy techs as well.
My guess is that it would depend upon your state regulations and the pharmacy where you would like to work.
As the country ages, anyone involved in medical care will be in demand.
PTCB who writes the PTCE, only requires a high school diploma/GED to take the exam. Taking a class will not raise your salary, only the certification will do that. Most techs with 6 months of experience can easily pass the very easy PTCE. The exam is mostly math questions. If you get certified through PTCE, the certification is national. Store certification is just that, store certification. No other store will recognize it.
There is a demand for Techs, but there is a surplus of them.
