Pharmacy Technicians?

RN2B asked the question:

I am currently studying to become a nurse. While waiting for entry into the program, I was thinking of working as a Pharmacy Technician. I know several chain pharmacies will hire and train and prepare you for the certification exam. I’ve been taking some practice test and I think I’m doing very well as I’ve taking many classes towards nursing that have helped me. Do you think I should go the route of getting a job first or should I get my certification first? The test application deadline is Friday, that’s why I ask. I’m trying to decide if I should go ahead and sign up for the test.

Grats on picking a solid profession! I’ve been a pediatric nurse for the past 3 years, great job to be in.

Now to your question. If you have been scoring very well on practice tests–as in above 85%–(are they similar to the actualy accrediting exam?) then I would say go for it!

To my knowledge there isn’t an amount that you can’t take those tests..so if end up not doing so well, you can apply for a job that’ll teach you in-house for the certifying test…win win, in my opinion :)

Good luck either way and again, good job on the profession choice, getting into nursing school is one of the harder steps for alot of people.

I know that Walgreens does do on-the-job training for those wanting to become a pt. They will provide you the paperwork in order to prepare for the national exams. There is no real requirement that you have to have some kind of formal education to become a pt. You can just apply for the PTCB examination if you feel you are ready. The test is around $129 so study hard!

Stick with nursing. If you aren’t going to stay in pharmacy or try to become a pharmacist, it would be a waste of time.
