How much education to be a pharmacist?
ptadam22 asked the question:
I am thinking about changing my goals from becoming a physical therapist to a pharmacist. What type of schooling does one need? Do you need to get a bachelors in chemistry and then apply to a pharmacy school? What classes should be taken before the special training and how long does it take to be a physician after one gets their bachelors. Thank you very much.

In Australia, you need to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy and hold relevant work experience and be a member of the pharmacy guild of Australia.
In the US you get a bachelors in pre-pharmacy or in a related science field with all appropriate prerequisites. Then 4 years of pharmacy school for the Pharm D.
You don’t NEED to have a bachelor’s in chemistry, you only have to make sure you have some kind of bachelors and take all your prerequisite classes. Prereqs vary per school (I’d suggest looking them up on school websites), but a few guaranteed important ones are: lower div biology, lower div chemistry w/lab, organic chemistry w/lab, human anatomy and physiology w/lab, microbiology w/lab. Like I said, it varies per school so make sure your bases are covered. As for your undergrad major, the most important thing is to pick something you’ll do well in. GPA is VERY VERY important. Yes, majoring in biology or chemistry will provide you with useful background to do well in your prerequisite classes, plus you’d be killing two birds with one stone since many of your pharmacy prereqs will overlap with your bio/chem major requirements anyway. I won’t lie, majoring in some science looks better to potential schools, but if you think majoring in chem will significantly lower your GPA, don’t do it. Many schools in the US will want you to take the PCAT exam. Pharm school is 4 years.
I think both careers are great! I have many friends in who are Pharmacists and my husband is a Physical Therapist. I don’t know where you live, but in the USA we have a big shortage on pharmacists and one friend I know in NY makes 150,000 / year. He said when all the baby boomers retire, the shortage will be worse. Also You don’t have to work your way up in that field which is a big plus.
I know that doesnt answer your question but I wanted to add that in ;p
All I know on the college part is that 4 years in Pharmacy school and 2 years prior… 6 years total.. It’s worth it in the end!
