Western Career College Vs. Unitek - Pharmacy Tech?
Moe Moe asked the question:
Hi, I recently tried to sign up with Western Career College in the bay area, and they gave me a nice tour of the place, showed me everything, everything looked good, but their asking for almost $25,000 which will go through a financial aid…..
Now what I did a research, and it seems like Unitek AND Bosten Reed College, charge ALOT less than W.C.C[Western Career College]…….
Unitek - $1,750
Boston Reed - $1,695
W.C.C - $24,355
But it seems as though W.C.C gives me an Associates Degree in becoming a pharmacy tech…… Now I don’t know if the other colleges give a degree, but that sounded good…..
I’m very confused and I need help with this, so someone please guide me as to what I should do…
By the way, I live in California so the Pharmacies out here DON’T provide training, or pay for your school.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, Western Career College is a 14 Month program…
The other two are 6 to 7 months ONLY!
But I don’t think their going to give me the right training, or degrees…
Does anyone know?
Please help!
Thanks!!

Pharmacy Tech Certification?
Ashley asked the question:
I am about to enroll in a short pharmacy tech certification course and I have a few questions. Do employers prefer techs that are already certified over ones that they have to train on the job? I will be getting certified through the PTCB, so is that nation-wide certification, or will I need to certify in more than one state (I live within 5 miles of a state line and want the option to work in either state)? And does the more training you have determine your pay?
Thanks

Pharmacy Clerk?
Elizabeth asked the question:
I am applying for a position as a Pharmacy Clerk at a CVS while I train to become a Pharmacy Technician. I am taking a class in school right now and I have been doing on the job training at this particular CVS and I would like to work there. The pharmacist asked me what my plans were for after high school, my high schools hours and if I was 18 (which I am). I really do enjoy working there and I like all the other employees and they all seem fond of me too. This will be my first job too. So I have three questions.
Do you think they are interested in hiring me?
In my application how much should I ask for as a starting wage?
How likely is it that I will get hired?
Also, I don’t mind working nights or weekends. Besides my school hours (10:30 - 4:00), I’m pretty flexible and I plan on attending a university in the city I live in too.

Pharmacy School?
Drazen B asked the question:
I have a few questions regarding pharmacy school in general:
If I were to chose to go to a nearby UC such as Riverside or Santa Cruz, and maintain my GPA above 3.7 and show an exemplary record, could I then transfer to a pharmacy program such as USC School of Pharmacy after two years in the UC where I would begin my training? Would the same apply for state schools such as SDSU?
and,
Ive heard that retail chains will provide substantial financial assistance if a pharmacy student pledges to work for them upon school completion. ( is this true? )

pharmacy tech at rite-aid?
Erin asked the question:
How difficult is it to go from being a front end sales associate at Rite-Aid to being a pharmacy tech with at least a state license? Mine would be Alabama. I know you have to take a drug test. Is there a written test or do you get training on the job?

Is it true about the new pharmacy technician law being passed on july 1st?
Angie asked the question:
I’ve been hearing around that a new pharmacy technician law is being passed, requiring pharm techs to have to have a degree in order to work, due to drug thefts, serious accidents and chain employers working regular cashiers and such in the pharmacy without prior training?
I have recently been certified by the PTCB as a pharmacy and have been having such a hard time looking for work, and was told that that law was the reason I was having such a hard time. Some clarification would be awesome. In the meantime, I’ll be researching.

What careers are availiable in medical?
PeguinBackPacker asked the question:
The obvious is nursing and doctor, but I was wondering about other fields. I am looking at certification programs (maybe dental assistant, nurse’s aid, medical assistant, pharmacy assistant, pt assistant, admin assistant, and ect.) and was wondering what careers through certification is out there, how long is the training and how much it costs, and what are some good schools. What are the employment demands, are they high?
How portable are they, could such qualifications be accepted world wide or travel easy?
Any suggestions or information on what job paths are available in the various fields?
Answer what you can or point me in the right direction. I know they are broad, but whatever answers I can get would make asking detailed questions easier later on.
